Lunar New Year in San Francisco 2023

Maggie Bach January 13, 2023

2023 is the Year of the Rabbit and the red envelopes, lion dances, delicious food, and parades signal the celebration of the Lunar New Year. San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest and oldest one in the US and there are plenty of festivities around The City to ring in the New Year which falls on Sunday, January 22nd. Let’s hop around to eight different activities to reap more prosperity, longevity, and peace into our year!

Chinese New Year Festival and Parade

An iconic and beloved event in San Francisco since the 1860s. The festival and parade have grown and elevated in scale over the years and are the biggest parade celebrating the Lunar New Year outside of Asia. It will be held on Saturday, February 4th on Market, Geary, Post, and Kearny streets. Colorful flags, banners, lanterns, and drums bring together this truly one-of-a-kind celebration in The City. Our apartments at Crystal Tower, 350 Union, 1000 Chestnut, and Clay Park Towers are all less than a 10 minutes drive from this vibrant event!

Flower Market Fair

If you’re looking for fresh flowers, fruits, and supplies to help decorate your home ready for LNY, the flower market fair has got you covered. On January 14th and 15th, over 120 booths and concessions will be readily available in SF’s historic Chinatown. Performances of traditional Chinese acrobats and folk dances will also be at the event so make it a day of shopping and entertainment! The new Central Subway gets our residents at Trinity Place to Chinatown in 15 minutes!

In celebration of LNY, restaurants and bakeries in The City are offering themed menus to help usher in the Year of the Rabbit. Annie’s Cakes sells vegan confections including tang yuan, sweet rice balls with filling, symbolizing togetherness and union of the family for the holiday. Annie’s offers pick-ups at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market, a 10-minute ride on MUNI for our residents at 1177 Market! Z & Y restaurant and Yank Sing are offering curated LNY menus so you can celebrate with friends and family over a delicious meal. Both restaurants are less than 10 minutes away from our apartments at Trinity Towers!

Rabbit on Parade Statues

Rabbit on Parade is a public art project that highlights local artists and showcases the culture and traditions of LNY. Five rabbit statues have been stationed all around The City and each one represents an important symbol associated with the holiday including prosperity, wealth, family, and more. We won’t give away where the rabbits are… but here’s a hint! There’s one within a five-minute walk from our apartments at 33 8th and 1177 Market!

Chinatown YMCA Run

In its 45th year, the Chinatown YMCA LNY Run offers the opportunity to walk or run in the iconic streets of Chinatown. 5K and 10K options are available as well as a virtual run for those outside of The City. Proceeds from the event support organizations and programs for youth, teens, and services for low-income families in SF. Sign-ups are open now! Our apartments at 2133 Stockton and 350 Union are right by this beloved run!

California Academy of Sciences Nightlife

A different kind of Lunar New Year party! The California Academy of Sciences is hosting a themed nightlife event filled with mahjong, tattoos, and a late-night open market inspired by the ones in Asia. Vendors from locally Asian-owned businesses will be in their special market and tickets are available now. Our apartments at 2240 Golden Gate Ave are less than 10 minutes away from the museum!
